Acoustic insulation: how can you create your own?

If you have enough space and DIY skills, then you may be able to acoustically insulate a house or room independently and economically.
However, if you don't have much experience with tools, it will be more beneficial to trust the experienced hands of a professional.

To create your own acoustic insulation you don't have to spend a lot of money. With a little care, you can achieve great results and without going over your budget. The main focus, when doing it all yourself, is to pay close attention to the choice of materials:

Floating flooring: basically, it is an additional floor that is not in contact with the floor below. This double floor is able to reduce all sounds and eliminates vibrations.

Pyramidal acoustic panels: these are panels that are very common especially in recording studios. They have pyramid shapes on the surface to reflect sound waves and help regulate the acoustic propagation of sound.

Rockwool panels or rolls: These are often used in double walls because of the great capacity that rockwool panels or rolls have for insulation. However, experience and skill is required to handle glass wool, otherwise there is a risk of getting hurt.

Soundproofing panels: these are panels that can be purchased directly from the manufacturer, but it is best to consult a technician and make a thorough analysis of the acoustics of the place to be insulated.

Acoustic insulation on the walls and ceiling!

If the noises are coming from above and you want to acoustically insulate the ceiling, you should add an additional ceiling to insulate the original one. However, the quickest method may be to install sound absorbing panels, which can dampen impact noise and vibrations.

As for the walls of the house, you can simply apply sound insulation panels to the wall adjacent to the room where the sounds are coming from. There are stores that sell pre-defined panels, that is, products with plaster on one side and sound-absorbing material on the other. It is important to know how to cut the panels so that they are the right size and perfectly positioned.

How to soundproof a room?

With small precautions you can avoid structural interventions in the insulation process. One tip for acoustically insulating a room without spending a lot of money is to focus on door and window seals that will help protect against external noise. If you want to do a more complete job, there is always the option of replacing the old frames with insulating windows and doors.

What is the best material for sound insulation?

Among the most commonly used, and also effective, materials for acoustically insulating a house are lead and rubber, both of which have a high density. However, only rubber, both natural and synthetic polymer-based, is still used for soundproofing purposes.
